Cahaba+UAB Family Medicine Integrated Residency Program
Get a Head Start on Your Family Medicine Career During Your Final Year of Medical School
Ask us about our Integrated Residency — an immersive, non-binding pathway for rising 4th-year MD and DO students featuring enriched clinical continuity, residency didactic immersion, and dedicated educational stipends.
Are you a third-year medical student (MD or DO) passionate about full-scope, community-based family medicine? The Cahaba+UAB Family Medicine Integrated Residency Program bridges undergraduate and graduate medical education. Most medical schools—both allopathic (LCME) and osteopathic (COCA)—can participate, allowing eligible students to spend their 4th year (MS-4 / OMS-4) embedded within our residency community. You'll gain hands-on outpatient continuity, attend weekly resident didactics, practice full-scope primary care (including osteopathic principles and manipulative medicine where applicable), and prepare for practice in underserved communities from day one.
Program Highlights & Features
Enriched 4th-Year Curriculum
Experience longitudinal outpatient continuity clinic, attend weekly residency didactics, and complete a mentored family medicine scholarly project alongside faculty and residents.
Educational Stipend
Some participants may be eligible to receive a funded educational stipend during their fourth year to help offset living and academic expenses. The stipend is tied strictly to active educational participation, with zero repayment obligation or penalty if a student transitions back to traditional curricula.
Participants can attach to any of our diverse training environments: Rural (Centreville), Urban (Birmingham/West End), Frontier (Marion/Camden), or Highlands (UAB Highlands Hospital).
Four Training Tracks
Loan Forgiveness Opportunities
Through initiatives such as Alabama's Rural Health Transformation Program, participants ultimately matching into our Rural or Frontier campus can access forgivable loans tied to a service commitment, with residency years counting toward service fulfillment.
100% compliant with NRMP policies. Non-binding participation allows students to apply anywhere via ERAS, interview freely, and rank according to their personal preference. Participants in good standing are ranked within standard program quotas.
Full Match Independence

Frontier Track (Marion & Camden): Deeply rural and frontier medicine in Alabama's Black Belt, integrating clinic rotations, nursing home care, and emergency room services at rural emergency hospitals.
Highlands Track (UAB Highlands Hospital): Integrated suburban and community hospital-based training combining ambulatory health center practice with inpatient medicine.
NRMP Match Compliance & FAQs
Is the Integrated Residency program binding?
No. The program is fully non-binding. Students submit applications through ERAS, interview at any institutions they choose, and participate in the Main Residency Match. Neither the student nor the program is under any contractual compulsion to rank the other.
Is there a separate NRMP match code?
No. Integrated residency participants apply and enter the Match under our standard track codes (Rural, Urban, Frontier, Highlands) and existing quota allocations.
