Why did you come to Cahaba UAB FMR?
It was in Kentucky at the GMHC where I first encountered the Cahaba Family Medicine team. From that initial meeting to my last interaction during the event, I felt a deep conviction in my heart—this was where I wanted to pursue my residency. The opportunity to grow both professionally and spiritually, in an environment that fosters a relationship with God and supports mission trips, is truly a blessing. Another reason I was drawn to the Cahaba family is the authenticity and exceptional clinical competence its residents demonstrate. Through my interactions during the conference and beyond, I witnessed genuine compassion, passion for service, and strong clinical skills. It is truly a dream come true to embark on this journey with the Cahaba Highlands track.
What does your life outside of medicine look like?
Outside of medicine, I enjoy going to church, attending small groups, practicing yoga and spending time with my cats. Back home in Bolivia, I was actively involved in rescuing and fostering stray dogs and cats. Although I’ve faced some limitations since moving to the U.S., I’ve continued to support animal welfare by assisting with rescues and volunteering at local shelters.
What is a destination you'd like to visit or live?
A destination on my bucket list is Kenya, where I hope to go on a safari and experience its incredible wildlife and landscapes.

My faith and my parents are the driving forces in my life. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their unwavering support and sacrifices. They motivate me every single day, and I am deeply grateful to God that I still have both of them in my life.

As for my plans after residency, I currently intend to pursue a fellowship in Geriatrics.

Why did you come to Cahaba UAB FMR?
I chose Cahaba UAB Family Medicine Residency because it truly felt like a hidden gem. From the moment I learned about the program, I was drawn to its commitment to serving both urban and underserved populations, as well as its unique blend of academic partnership with UAB and community engagement. The opportunity to participate in international mission trips, train in a top-tier academic environment with renowned specialists, and gain early exposure to sports medicine through work with high school, college, and even minor league professional teams was especially appealing. What stood out most, though, was the culture—everyone here is incredibly welcoming and supportive, and the atmosphere reflects the best of Southern hospitality. It felt like the perfect place to grow not just as a physician, but as a person committed to compassionate, community-centered care. I felt this was the right environment to build a strong foundation and be part of shaping something truly special.

That internal drive and mindset has shaped my work ethic and perseverance to other avenues of life. Growing up as a first-generation Vietnamese American, I also watched my parents make sacrifices and work incredibly hard to create a better life for our family. Their example taught me humility, determination, and the value of resilience. That upbringing, along with my passion for medicine, sports, and the opportunity to help others, continues to motivate me to pursue excellence in everything I do.
What is your (current) post-residency plan?
My goal is to pursue a sports medicine fellowship and eventually work with both collegiate and professional athletes. I want to combine my passion for medicine and athletics to provide care at the highest level while continuing to serve my community.

Why did you come to Cahaba UAB FMR?
If you know anything about the Couples Match process, then you know that it is truly in God's hands to go wherever we end up going. With that being said, Cahaba UAB FMR has been the perfect landing spot for my partner and I (Family Medicine for myself, and General Surgery for her). I was notably impressed by the leadership of Cahaba UAB FMR, and with Dr. Salser's personal touch on interview day, and am more than thrilled to have joined a program so dedicated to its faith-based mission and provision of passionate healthcare for all. My goals of both becoming a full-spectrum primary care physician and of having the opportunity to pursue post-residency fellowship are clearly aligned with the Cahaba UAB FMR goals of training exemplary servant leader Family Medicine physicians.

Why did you come to Cahaba UAB FMR?
I decided to join the Cahaba + UAB FM Residency program largely because of the patient population and geographical location. My motivation behind pursuing a career in medicine was to show the many patients who look and act like myself, that we too can obtain powerful positions in healthcare, and provide care to our critically underserved communities. Training in Alabama for me is like being home, and I believe that I have a duty to serve the patients from all walks of life to ensure that their health and medical needs are met. I have no doubts that the patient population that Cahaba serves is robust and well diverse to train me for an ever evolving career in Family Medicine.

Why did you come to Cahaba FMR?
An important aspect of Cahaba-UAB for me was the opportunity for training in global health and full-scope family medicine, with its international rotations and experienced faculty. My childhood in Bangladesh and my faith heavily influenced how I want to serve society. My goal is to improve health care access through policy and capacity building wherever needed. I wanted a program where I could integrate my public health and medicine backgrounds in a global health setting. It was important for me to be part of a program that believes that learning about our community and about social determinants of health are just as important as understanding the medicine for proper patient care. I also wanted a program that values their residents and patients as people, not just their role in the health care setting.
I have been in Birmingham for over a decade and have come appreciate what it offers and look forward to its growth; it's also nice to remain in the same state as my parents.
